Winter Birds - Part 1


There are many beautiful colorful animals
that can be found in the KY/TN area throughout the Winter. 
They are the Winter Birds!  

(The Perching Birds are at the bottom of the list of bird groups)

There are many birds that hang around KY/TN during the 
cold months of winter.  You can learn 30 of them very easily.
This post and the next 2 posts contain photos and information 
about the most common winter birds seen in this area. 

This is Part 1.  Learn these 10 birds first and then 
go to Part 2 and then 3.

Northern Cardinal    8.3 - 9.1 inches
- Bright red overall with red crest
- Black mask and throat
- Large thick red bill




American Robin    7.9 - 11 inches
- Gray upperparts, darker head
- Rusty red breasts and sides
- Yellow bill,  white eye crescents




Blue Jay    9.8 - 11.8 inches
- Bright blue crest, back, and wings
- Black collar and bill
- Gray and white underparts




Eastern Bluebird     6.3 - 8.3 inches
- Deep blue above
- Rusty on throat and breast




Starling    8 - 9 inches
- Glossy black to dark brown overall
- White spots all over
- Yellow bill




Mourning Dove    9 - 13.4 inches
- Brown to buffy-tan all over
- Black spots on wings
- Long, streamlined distinctive shape



Mockingbird     8.3 - 10.2 inches
- Overall gray-brown, paler on breast/belly
- Two white wingbars on each wing
- Long black tail, white outer tail feathers




Crow     15.7 - 20.9 inches
- All black, even legs and bill
- Thick neck with a heavy straight bill




Eastern Meadowlark     7.5 - 10.2 inches
- Pale brown marked with black
- Bright yellow underparts
- Black V across chest




Hermit Thrush     5.5 - 7.1 inches
- Chubby with rich brown head and back
- Reddish tail
- Pale underparts with distint spots on throat and
smudged spots on breast
- Complete white eye ring

Go over these 10 birds many times and learn them 
before continuing on to the next set of birds.

 When you think you're ready, 
then take a quiz over these birds.  
Write the names down on a sheet of paper as a reference.

Click any photo in any order and try to ID that bird.
